I have a Win98 Peer-to-Peer network connected with NetBEUI through a Linksys
8 way switch. I use TCP/IP for my broadband connection through a 2-Wire
router/firewall connected to the switch. File and Printer Sharing is
disabled on all of the TCP/IP settings
All of the Win98 boxes work well and connect with each other very quickly.
I did a clean Win2000 SP4 install on one of the systems that was already
running Win98 and NT4. I use System Commander and all of the OSs are in
their own partitions.
Win98 and NT4 connections are almost instantaneous. Every thing else works
well except for the slow Win2000 Peer-to-Peer network connection.
I can access broadband and get on the internet almost instantly with Win2000
but when I click on the Computers Near Me or Workgroups Icon, it takes over
20 seconds for the next window to open and then another 20+ seconds after I
click on a computer icon for the drives to display. Once the Win98
connection is made then everything works quickly until I close the
connection and I have to start over again.
I have tried mapping the drives on Win98 systems but it didn't make much
difference.
I can access Win2000 from any of the Win98 systems and it displays almost
instantly with 100mb connections but not the other way around.
I have my main Win98 box set up as the Browse Master and I disabled Computer
Browser services in Win2000. I've also set IsDomainMaster and
MaintainServerList to False in the Win2000 registry. I have accounts set up
for all of the Win98 shares.
I need to install some software updates that require Win2000. The system
times out trying to access any of my networked printers.
I've searched the internet for a whole day and didn't find anything that
addressed my problem.
Anyone know an easy way to speed up the connections?
Thanks, Chas.
