Hi, just finished install of windows 2000 server and tried to connect to
existing home network.

The network is like this:

Win2kSrv ->Hub <-Win2kProf

The hub is connected to internet, all PCs are installed with NetBEUI and
TCP/IP and have the same workgroup name, all PCs can directly connect to
internet through the hub.

Now the problems are:

1) the win2kProf can see computer name of Win2kSrv, but if try to
connect/open, a dialog will popup asking user name and password, but no
matter what user name and password tried, including the admin's password, it
just refused to connect.

2) cannot open Win2kSrv's workgroup on Win2kSrv, the error is:
"Workgroup is not accessible, the network path was not found."

Anyone can help how can I connect these PCs?

Please tell us that's not really a hub you have both PCs connected to, but a
router or other Internet connection device ... because if it is just a hub
and you don't have a router or other device providing firewall protection,
both your servers are exposed to the Internet for any passing hacker or
cracker to own.

How are the two computers getting their IP addresses? Please do an IPCONFIG
/ALL on both PCs and post the results in a reply here.

Thanks for reply!

I am not sure what it is, when I bought it, I was told it is a Hub. On it's
front, it is labeled as "EZ switch 10/100" under the name of SMC.

Actually, each computer is installed with firewall. When connect locally,
I'll stop the firewall and internet. So I am not worry about hacker. Each
computer installed with a software provided by the ISP, which creates a ppp
adapter and can dynamically obtain IP address when connect to ISP for
internet connection.

The hub has a port (total 5 ports) to connect to a modem provided by the ISP
then the modem connect to ISP. the other 3 ports connect Win2kPro,Win2kSrv
and Win98, these ports are equal.

On the Win2KSrv, the ipconfig returns:

Local:
Connection - specific DNS Suffix . :
Autoconfiguration IP address.: 169.254.89.231
subnet mask: 255.255.0.0
Default gateway :

ppp adapter:
Connection - specific DNS Suffix . :
Autoconfiguration IP address.: 64.253.89.231
subnet mask: 255.255.255.255
Default gateway : 64.253.89.231

Now something has a little change: The Win2kSrv can see the same as Win2kPro
and another Win98, it can open share fold on Win98 machine, but when try to
open Win2kPro, same dialog (Enter Network Password) will popup for "connect
as" and "password".

Are these enough information you need?

Yep, that's plenty, I think; at least enough to tell what the primary
problem is. You have quite a mess there, and it's not going to be an easy
one to fix with the network hardware you have now.

If your "modem" is a cable or DSL modem, I would strongly suggest that you
get a broadband router, connect it to the modem, then connect the computers
to the router. This gives you firewall and NAT protection, the PCs will be
able to be set up to autoconfigure their network connection settings and
that alone will probably resolve your problems.

Impossible, no; difficult, probably.

Your first problem is almost certainly that no device on your network is
giving out IP addresses, so each PC is getting a self-assigned IP address on
the network, and thus not able to talk to each other. You need to get some
IP addresses assigned in the same range (something a router would
automatically do for you, by the way) to each PC so they can see each other
on the network.

You may wish to start with a site like http://www.wown.com/ or
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/ to see where you need to go from here.
Both have good "how-to" guides on setting up a small network.
