Hi,

Thanks to the predecessing administrator at my new employer all folders
under the C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\SYSVOL folder are gone. This results in a long
list of events in teh eventlog stating that the Group Policy could not be
found and applied. Change the existing Group Policies is not possible
because they can not be found. Changing the right is also not possible. The
oldest backup also doesn't contain any good folders.

How to restore these folders and restore or reinstall Group Policies? I need
to change policies to install some application. The server is a single
Windows 2000 Standard Server with SP4+ and Terminal Services enabled in
application mode (30 users). It's the only server in the AD Domain.

You might want to post in the win2000.Active_directory newsgroup. There are
numerous KB articles about missing sysvol as shown below if you want to
explore that option, though most assume another domain controller is
available, except for the recommendation to do a manual rebuild . Having
only one domain controller without good backups gives you less options
unfortunately. One method that "may" be worth a try is to do a System State
Backup of the domain controller, take the domain controller offline from the
other domain computers, dcpromo it to a server, dcpromo it again to a domain
controller with the same domain name, restore the System State backup, put
it back online. Before trying such I would highly recommend making an image
backup just in case things go bad. The dcpromo may even fail without the
sysvol share. Again I urge you to post in the Active_directory newsgroups to
see if anyone over there has actually gone through what you are facing.---
