Win2k Pro sometimes cannot find DNS on Windows NT

Every so often I have computers that run Win2k Pro and it
will all of a sudden stop finding the DNS server which is
on the NT 4.0 platform. If I do an ipconfig /flushdns or
release and renew my ip address it will start working
again. Any Idea what is causeing this to drop connectivity
to the Win2k Pro PC.

This may not be a DNS problem at all. Have you tried updating the NIC
drivers on the client?

No, I will give that a try. What makes you think that
would cause it. Have you run across this before?

Are you specifying more than one DNS address on the client?
Are there mutliple DNS addresses in Scope Option 006?

If you have mutliples, such as the NT4 and the ISP's DNS, then I can
understand why this is happening. It's based on the way the client side DNS
resolver service works.

Let us see an ipconfig /all from the client please.

entry. This is indeed in the DCHCP Scope. What can I do to
fix that. I need the backup DNS.

The only way to fix it, and which is the best practice, is to ONLY use your
internal DNS. Configure a forwarder for external resolution. This is a
common issue, especially if you go to Win2k AD. AD servers and members must
only the internal one.

Hi Mike

I meant to post that, sorry i forgot:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=300202

It will show you how to delete the root zone (if you got one) and configure
a forwarder. If not sure what address to use, use this, it works:
4.2.2.2.

Cheers!

Hello>

Thanks again Ace. Is there a document to show me how to
configure the forwarder for external resolution? I will
take my ISP's Dns entries out. Where do I configure the
forwarder?

Thanks again for all your help.

Mike

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=300202 will show you how. If you have a
root zone, delete that first. The article shows that as well.
