Intermittently, our mapped drives to the server fail.

If you fire up Windows Explorer, the mapped drives appear with a red cross
against each drive map.

Rebooting the client resolves the problem.

Environment:

Win2K Pro SP4 with Realtek 8139C with latest driver (28 Oct 03) accessing
Win2K SBS fully patched.

Efforts made to resolve problem:

1. Update NIC driver.
2. Replace NIC.
3. Change port on 10/100 switch.
4. Try to keep active connection by pinging the server in a DOS window.
5. Change the 'autodisconnect' parameter in the registry on server and
client.

Other comments:

I have this problem on a number of LANs that I support. The problem only
manifests itself on Win2K Pro.

Grateful for any suggestions.

Maurice

Don't know if this will help, but your problem sounds
similar to one that I had.

Check out KB article Q297684 it worked for my problem
with the RED "X" on the drive...

Hope this helps!

John

The red X only signifies that the session has been disconnected. The next time you try to access the drive, it will reconnect. Are
you getting errors from this? If so, you can tweak the server autodisconnect feature to meet your needs. For more information on
changing this value, see 138365 How Autodisconnect Works in Windows NT and Windows 2000 http://support.microsoft.com/?
id=138365.

Thank you,
