OK let me begin by introducing myself. I'm 16, from alabama, and I'm a
nerd...and one of the few nerds who proudly admits it...from what i see this
group has a few like me, so that's good news.

Basically, I want to setup a sort of internet-based nationwide LAN system
between me and my friends (all of us are running either 2k or XP.) The best
way (from what i can see) to do this is with a domain. Of course as i said
i have 2k pro, not server or adv. server. My question is: i there a free,
third party (or even official) software that will allow me to operate a
computer as a windows login domain?

The specs on the server are:

1.4GHz Athlon
768MB RAM
40GB HD

Hence, its not some little POS. The thing is, i have the networking done
locally through my DI-604 router (dlink). And it works fine between my
notebook and server, but i want to EVENTUALLY make my own software to allow
us to share RAM and CPU resources aswell (its been done on linux before, but
i don't believe before on windows.) hence making it function as if it was
one big SuperComputer.

But as i said, I've allready paid over 500 bucks (about 200 too much, i now
see) for 2000 Pro, and i'm simply not going to shell out any more cash to
buy adv. server.

Ok so...any help?

haha i figure while i'm here, i might aswell post a link to my web
site...its simply a personal blog...hmm...mabye one of you people will be
more likely to respond if i seem bored...which i am...

Welcome fellow nerd. First of all, forget about the word "domain." It
doesn't apply to what you think you are trying to do. Also, forget the word
"server." You don't have a "server." You have a desktop pc, running a
desktop o/s.

Ok, so you want a supercomputer running over the Internet. Not gonna
happen, dude. Why would you want to anyway? I can only think of a few
applications for such a thing. For instance, the SETI@home screensaver
project aims to crunch trillions and kazillions of bits of data about
extraterrestrial signals using personal computers all over the world in
hopes of someday finding life "out there." Are you saying, a 16 year old
such as yourself has a need for such immense research capabilities?

So find out what you really want to do that your little desktop pc can't
handle all by itself. But, first things first. You really should read a
little about Internet security before opening up your network or your
friends' networks to the dark world that is the Internet. There is much you
need to know about the reality of the Internet. Go to
microsoft.public.win2000.security and ask some basic questions there before
going forward. Please, if you are really as bored as you say you are, then
you should have some time to read everything you can about firewalls and
ports and stuff and then, when you think you know enough, read some more.
Now that you are on the Internet, you have a responsibility as an Internet
user to help prevent the vampant spread of viruses and other malicious code
throughout the world. We all would appreciate it and I'm sure your parents
would appreciate it if you made sure your little network was secure before
trying to "share" stuff with your friends. I'm not kidding about this.

Once you feel safe and secure, launch Netmeeting. You already have it and
you can use it to play network with your buddies. Woopeee!!
