I'm looking for some things to check workstation side on this...I don't
believe DNS is the problem - which would seem the usual suspect for this
behavior. We do have a large network going here with only two DNS servers,
possible traffic issues. Any ideas on diagnosing this sort of DNS problem
would be appreciated. Essentially the clients will hang for a bit on
"Applying computer settings" or "Running startup scripts" although the
clients do not have startup scripts (the fact that it says "running startup
scripts" is unrelated to scripts, just happens to be on the screen when
workstation fumbles...same for "Applying computer settings as far as I can
tell). I can reboot the workstation and it may or may not hang on "Applying
computer settings" or "Running Startup Scripts" on the next attempt...any
thoughts? These clients have no static IP info, all is picked up via
DHCP...our dhcp is pretty solid, IP info being wrong is slim to none. Any
thoughts? I had seen others mention clearing startup entries from the
registry...I'm looking into this as well, any specific insight about that
would also be appreciated.
Env/Client info:
- Mostly Dell Latitude C Series laptops (most have 3Com 3C920 with "hardware
default" set which could be a factor?)
- Win2K AD env, DHCP (All IP settings dynamic...ipconfig /all returns
correct info)
- Does not occur on all clients although I can't see any common thread in
what could be different from a quick workstation and a slow workstation.
- No firewall s/w
- McAffee Virus s/w installed (seen others in this newsgroup mentioning
stuff about live updates...I plan to check on this possibility)
