Win2K ping problem

Dear all,

I am using Windows 2000 professional PC in my company's intranet when access
to internet through a proxy server.
There is a dial-up modem installed in my PC for accessing internet directly
for testing.

It can be ping to the internet when I use PPP through my modem connected to
my ISP.

After I installed IIS5.0 on my PC, it can not ping to the internet by PPP
anymore.

It reply "Host not reachable from 10.x.x.x ...."

"10.x.x.x" is the gateway address of my company's intranet.

However it can be ping to internet through PPP when I disable my LAN card of
my PC.

After I re-enable my LAN card, it cannot ping to the internet anymore.

I have try to un-install my IIS5.0 from my PC, however it still cannot back
to normal as before.

Any one can help ?

Ask you network admin. More than likely they are blocking icmp
traffic (which includes pings). You're also a security risk having a
modem in your computer than can bypass their firewall.

You can't ping an internet address. Can you surf? You get a response from
the gateway, so can you ping it?

I thought 10.x.x.x was a private address and could not get out under any
circumstances

After the installation of IIS 5.0 the PPP are now cannot ping or ftp to the
outside world.
It cannot restore back to normal as before even IIS 5.0 has been
uninstalled.

However, it becomes OK to ping and ftp through my PPP in case I disable my
LAN card.

Anyone understand my problem and can help ?

There's you're problem. Since your using private addresses, I assume
there's a NAT translation between you and the internet. You nornally
can't ping across this.
 
This should be a matter of basic troubleshooting. Start at the nearest point
and see how far you CAN ping, then do a tracert to the nearest thing you
CAN'T ping on the route you are trying to go through. See if the path is
broken or if the route is incorrect, then correct the problem.
 
Try changing the binding order. Bring the dial up adapter to the top of the
list. That way it is the first net connection it tries. What could be
happening is that it is timing out and failing on your intranet connection.

Awesome diagnosis Kieran! This is one for the notebook. I tested this and
found that the order of the default routes changes depending on the binding
order, if anyone is interested. With binding order:
adapter 1 - 10.10.10.10
adapter 2 - 11.11.11.11

The top two lines of a "route print" are

0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 11.11.11.11
0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 10.10.10.10

If you reverse the binding order, the default route orders are reversed. I
wonder how many techs have pulled out some hair over this one!
