Is there any way I can completely remove Outlook Express from my Win2K
setup?

Despite the fact that I've answered at least one window to say that I
do not want to use it as my default email program, it insists on
popping up at odd times ... for example when leaving mail at a web
page.

Add/Remove programs is no help ... the only related thing there is
"Outlook Express Update Q330994" which doesn't seem to be the basic
program itself. I tried renaming the Outlook Express folder under
"Program Files" so that Windows couldn't find it, but Windows won't
let me (says it's in use).

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
Components\{44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C}\IsInstalled - set it to 0.
At least, OE reinstall will be available.

Well this is interesting ... went into regedit and I did exactly as
you said (and confirmed that this was indeed the key for OE), set it
to zero and re-booted.

Windows was kind enough to give me a message when it started, telling
me that OE had been removed and asking me whether I'd like to have it
clean up my personal settings associated with it. I said "yes' and
booting completed.

So I went back to the web page I was at last night (where an attempted
message to support had caused OE to open) and guess what ..... OE
still opens!

And the key is still set to zero.

Hmmm ...

NP.
As I mentioned, the easy way to reinstall OE is to change that key and
reinstall trying to restore the broken registry and associations. Initially
you wanted to remove OE completely - but this is a default newsreader :) and
MS insists "If you remove Outlook Express, you must reinstall it".
