win2K machine becoming non-writable??

Best I can explain it.
My daughter began to tell me she couldn't access hot mail and I tuned her
out. She can't log on.
Then when I started to use it, stranger things happened. I tried to install
a Windows Security update and the files download fine but when it gets to
the install stage, nothing happens. It even says the update failed, start
over.
When I try to post a question using Outlook Express on that machine, it says
out of memory. I don't think I am out of memory. Task Manager doesn't show
an excessive amount of memory being consumed. 277K with 512 Mb onboard.
Also, I tried to copy files from the floppy disk onto a desktop folder.
Won't paste. Doesn't even come up as an option.
I even tried writing a file to a CDCreator app, drag and drop onto the D
drive. It doesn't work now.

Whew...this is beginning to sound like an Alfred Hitchcock movie.

I log on with administrator privileges so I don't think I should have a
local user access issue.

Any ideas of perhaps one simple thing that is causing all of this?

Thanks,
hazz

What do you use for an anti-virus program?

I see
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.html
is hitting a lots of folks today (although the patch was out on July
16).

Symantec. The anti-virus part is covered. Famous last words, eh?
Thank you for the link...I'll check that out.
I got bit on my laptop by the RPC show stopper.

Thank you Don.
I have a good symantec AVP running but no firewall. The firewall imperative
just came down heavy on my yesterday. I always thought my ISP was like
having a shark cage in between me and any danger. No more illusions there.
Thank you very much for the ideas. I will check them all out.

Hello Hazz,

You can also check the following things:

1. Can you create a new file on drive D? If not, test in Safe Mode.

2. Create a new Administrator account to test the problem.

Looks like someone didn't like my post. They nuked it. But if you check
back, you should have two Administrator accounts with complex passwords, and
set user privileges for all user accounts.

good luck,
don
