John

I'm experiencing frequent, random lockups on a Win2K SP2
machine. Lockup can occur in any program but more often
when running IE6 or OEXP. Lockups are total and complete
and require a hard power off reboot.
System is an AT, Socket 7 Motherbeard, 1999 Award BIOS,
AMD K6-2 500 CPU, 384MB of PC100 SDRAM, 13GB EIDE Hard
Drive with a single NTFS partition.
I can supply a Belarc Advisor report on this system or a
SysInfo report if needed.

This is a new clean install of Win2K on a drive that was
low level formatted to remove any corrupt data and write
out any bad sectors. Drive was foramtted NTFS during the
Win2K install.

That would be nice. While you are there, do you see anything odd in the
event logs? AMD K62 chips are notorious for heat problems, make sure the
CPU fan is adequite. Also, MS has fixed a few freezes, stop errors and
crashes since sp2, You may want to domnload and install SP4. It is also
entirely possible that you have failing hardware (anything from the
motherboard to the soundcard and down the list.)

Hi Paul.

Thank you for the pointers I've sent you in in depth
email. If/when I get this resolved I'll post the solution
here for the benefit of other readers who are as perlexed
as I am right now.
