Win2K is stuck on device driver setup after install of new motherboard

Friends,

I've been really stumped on this one. After installing a new MSI
motherboard on my Win2K (Pro) box, I encountered a STOP error (blue
screen) on boot up. After researching the problem, I determined that
it was caused by the new mobo IDE devices not being handled properly
with the IDE settings of the old mobo.

I determined the fix was to *repair* the Win2K installation from the
Win2K Upgrade CD. That fixed the STOP error. However, in the repair
process, Win2K is getting stuck on loading device drivers. The mouse
and keyboard are unresponsive at this point. I've let the machine set
for hours at this point, so I'm confident that it's really hung.

I understand there are two forms of repair, and I've tried both to
correct the problem. But the install gets stuck at the same place. If
I reset the machine, Win2k detects an incomplete setup and goes
through the same driver install process. Booting in Safe Mode results
in the same thing.

I've turned on boot logging and see that the last entries in the boot
log are Win2k loading the flpydisk.sys (I assume the floppy drive
controller).

What can I do to get past this point and get Win2k up and running? I
really don't want to reinstall from scratch and loose all my service
packs, pathes, upgrades, and tweeks.

Can I selectively disable drivers from loading by editing the registry
on the command line? Do I need a 3rd party tool such as ERD Commander
to do the job?

All help is greatly appreciated!

You might be able to get around the problem by disabling drivers.
However you might end having to rebuild. To disable drivers or services

Boot from Windows 2000 CD
Choose Repair
Choose Recovery Console and login
Type "listsvc" to list all services and drivers
Type "disable" followed by the driver name to disable
When finished type exit to reboot
