Does anyone know what the maximum number of folders that
Win2K can handle. Closest I can figure it is somewhere
around 14billion but my boss has requested the exact
number. As well the same information for Win2K3 would be
greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Hi, Mike.

It depends on the FILE system (FAT32, NTFS, etc.), not on the OPERATING
system (Win98, Win2K, etc.). You can show your boss this page from the
online version of TechNet:

Size Limitations in NTFS and FAT File Systems
http://www.microsoft.com/TechNet/prodtechnol/winxppro/reskit/prkc_fil_tdrn.asp?frame=true

This is from the WinXP Pro Resource Kit, but it applies to any Windows
version using those file systems.

Since a folder is "just another file" to the file system, you can have over
4 billion files (including folders) per volume. And note that the limit is
PER VOLUME, not per HD; a physical drive divided into 4 partitions could
have over 16 billion files and folders.
