We managed to munge the AD or DNS on a Win2K advanced
server and can only login to the machine in Safe Mode as
the Admin account.

We have been told that for data recovery purposes we might
be able to upgrade to WinXP Pro to gain normal access to
the machine. Can anyone confirm this?

Right now it is off the network and we don't get drivers
for CD-ROM etc. in safe mode and cannot access AD.

Thanks,
Mike

Mike just to ensure that I understand what your question is. You have a
server that is no longer operational. You have some 'data' that resides on
the physical server's HDU. You want to access these files by installing
another OS, in this case Windows XP.

If the above is correct then just take great care installing Windows XP. You
will not be able to upgrade Windows 2000 AS but you could install another OS
on the same partition. Just make sure that you do not format the partition
on which you about to install Win XP. Windows XP will allow you to
access/take ownership of these files.

If I misunderstood you please post again.
