Win2k: Cannot delete Network Connection

I have a Win2K laptop with a network connection that should be working, but
does not. It keeps telling me that a cable is unplugged, yet it is plugged
in. If I unplug it, the Linksys router shows no connection (red lights go
off), and when I plug it in the Linksys router show a connection (red lights
go on).
What is confusing is that I expected to see lights at the RJ45 connector on
at the laptop, but I get nothing.
If the network "card" was not working should not the Linksys router also not
light up when the cable is plugged in?

So I attempted to delete the network connection, and then recreate it, but
Win2K will not allow me to delete it ... and I'm logged in as Administrator!

Any insight is much appreciated.

Go to device manager, right click my computer- select- "properties", and
uninstall it. If its built in it will reinstall on reboot.

That I was able to do, but what I also want to do is delete the connection
from within the "Network and Dial-up Connections" area because I think it
might be corrupted. I was thinking of recreating the connection.

Have you tried un-installing TCP/IP and other network protocols first? That
may not let you remove the LAN connection but may address the potential
corruption issue.

I do understand what you're trying to do, and have tried doing it myself in
the past. If I recall correctly, as long as Windows recognizes the existence
of a NIC card, it will want to keep the network connection in existence,
even if it's disabled.

By the way, the symptoms you're describing are similar to an issue I had
with my sister's Dell laptop (XP Home). One of the things we did to diagnose
the situation was, within Device Manager, to play with the NIC card's
Connect Type settings, changing the speed and half/full duplex options. That
got the lights on the RJ45 connector and the router both to come on, but the
card still didn't work. Dell finally confirmed that its built in NIC was
the problem.

Once you uninstall it you will be able to delete it. If builtin to the
motherboard it will be re installed on reboot, which you can stop if you
choose by hitting cancel when it asks for the cd to load the drivers... or
you can reinstal;l a clean version with new settings.
