WIN2K and Truncation--Same as NT 4?

I know there is a little "feature" of NT4 that takes any
file names longer than 8.3 and truncates the name "behind
the scenes" and stores this information at the end of the
disk--at least that's how I remember it.

If anyone remembers this (or at least wants to support my
delusion) do you know if WIN2K and XP do this as well?

They do. You can see the 8.3 names at the command prompt by entering:

dir /x

Thanks, I thought I was losing it. Is this truncation
information stored elsewhere on the drive? I am concerned
as I am setting up storage for a large amount of data, and
I need to establish a naming convention. I don't want to
stick to 8.3, but if it will save me room I will.

Using DOS-compatible 8.3 filenames will definitely save directory space,
but the savings may not be sufficient to justify the lack of flexibility.
