Win2k and New Domains

We have installed a new Win2k3 server running active directory in a new
domain. I have the original domain running on NT4. I have Win2k and WinXP
clients.

I have been told that I need to move the clients to the new domain, but that
will create a new profile on the clients. Then I have to move all of their
docs, Netscape mail and other programs manually from the old domain profile
to the new domain profile. This is a LOT of work.

Is there a way that I can:

a. put the Win2k3 into my exsisting domain and move the users to it without
having to touch the clients? All their docs are local.

b. rename the old domain users on the clients to the new domain name?

This one one thing the outside service did not tell us to prepare for.

Any help would be great.

Thank you.

A couple of ways;

1.) You can use the Copy To function to mirror the profile. Logon at least
once after joining the new domain. Then while logged on as another user
(with administrative rights) Control Panel|System|User Profiles, select your
olduserprofile, Copy To, Browse to
%systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\userprofile.domainname
Change "Permitted to use:" to "userprofile.domainname" OK.

2.) Logon one to the new domain then run regedt32.exe and navigate to
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
locate the new profile SID and edit the Reg_Expand_Sz 'ProfileImagePath' to
point back to the old domain profile.

Dave,

Is there any way to automate this? I actually have been asked to assist
with something very similar (actually almost the exact same, w2k clients,
nt4.0 domain, need to move to win2k3 AD domain) .

Problem for me is I don't have the luxury of logging into the PC manually, i
have to do this on 3000+ desktops! So i need to determine if copying the
NT4.0 SID and move it into the newly created AD SID is possible.. any help
is appreciated!

You might be able to script something. Try asking them here.
