I am trying to connect a new laptop to our church network. I can ping the
server but cannot explore the workgroup. We have a linksys router that in
handling dhcp. The anomaly is that the laptop replaces another laptop that
communicated fine over the network with the same settings and operating
systems My user name is the same and password. NetBIOS is enabled . any
suggestions?

There are a number of potential issues here. Of particular concern is the
use of the Netgear router being used as a DHCP server. However, in an effort
to assist, perhaps you could help with the answer to a few questions:

1. Are all workstations using DHCP?
2. Has a DHCP reservation been setup for the server?
3. Is it possible that the Win2K server is also running DHCP server(!)

Suggestions:

Check each workstation config and at the same time, force a renewal on each
DHCP lease.

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Then check the IP configuration for discrepancies/anomolies.

Not sure about the server DHCP, how do I check? All the other machines are
running either win 2k or XP Home. I can see from the server all the machines
except Mobile1 and Mobile1 only recognize itself as in Church1 workgroup. If
I hook up the old laptap it will join the network and I can view all the
others in this workgroup from it. It is a xp pro with the same settings as
the new one and will work either wirelessly or through the ethernet.

Thanks for the suggestions,
Steve
