Hi,

I have Win2000 Professional + SP3 installed for some time
and now, for some reason, it doesn't start; instead, the
process stops at 'Starting Windows...' screen due to the
following missing/corrupted file

\winnt\system32\config\system

I've followed the recovery procedure (setup CD + 'R'epair
option) and I'm able to browse through the disks. I've
checked that the SYSTEM file (51.7MB size) has not been
erased, and that there's a SYSTEM.ALT file with the same
size.

I ran CHKDSK /P on the boot partition and it returned one
or more errors.

What would you advise me to do? Is it possible to
superimpose a new SYSTEM file directly?

Thankx...

Something is ballooning the system hive beyond limits. This article may help
you.

You can install a parallel install and should be able to
get back in and then replace what files you think are
corrupted in the original install.
