Win2000 < -- > WinXP problem

Hello,

I have two computers -- one Win2000, one WinXP Pro -- connected to a router;
both computers get their IP addresses from the router. Both computers are
in the same workgroup. (I have another computer connected to the router,
but it is in my office's domain.) The Win2000 can see the WinXP computer in
the workgroup, but can not connect to it.

I'm pretty sure the WinXP computer could connect to the Win2000, but that
has stopped working. In fact, trying to view the workgroup fails with
"<workgroup> is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this
network resource etc.".

TIA for any help.

I would check the firewall first. If you don't have firewall or it has correct settings, try to use net view \\remotepcip. post back with the error.

Thanks for the reply. I verified that the Windows firewall is off. I tried
the net view commands with ZoneAlarm active, and not active. Same results.

[C:\temp]net view
System error 6118 has occurred.
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available

[C:\temp]net view \\remotepcip
System error 53 has occurred.
The network path was not found.

Just to clearify: you have 3 computers on your router. 1-Windows 2000, 1 -
Windows XP, 1-Office. Is that correct?

Could your Office computer be interefering with your network?

I'm just brainstorming ideas:
- Sharing is enabled on both computer?
- Check the IP addresses. try to ping each other.
- You could also try to check the shares with the IP address.
\\192.168.0.2\share. That way you don't need to Computer name. This is to
check to see if they are communicating with each other.

I'd start with dat!

Just tried the net view command on the Win2000 computer.
'net view' lists the names of the two computers in the workgroup.
'net view \remotepcip' gives this
[C:\temp]net view \remotepcip
System error 123 has occurred.

The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

On the WinXP computer, 'net view' offers this:
[C:\temp]net view
System error 6118 has occurred.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available

Very frustrating.

Thanks for the reply.

I don't think the non-workgroup computer (the one in my office's domain) is
interfering; I'm pretty sure the two in the workgroup used to connect to one
another.

The two workgroup computers can ping each other successfully.
"File and printer sharing" is enabled. My printer is shared from the
Win2000 computer, and the WinXP can use it...

Ah ha -- "\\192.168.0.252\ShareName" in explorer seems to work... What is
going wrong with the name lookup in explorer?

Thanks for the help.

1. Please replace \\remoteip with the real remote computer ip.

2. make sure type \\remoteip instead \remoteip.

3. Make you enable file and printer sharing and have a folder to be shared.
