I need a Microsoft Network book disk to copy files from a
laptop hard drive (Win2000 with NTFS) with corrupt Win2000
system files (won't bootup), to a network location for
file recovery. Is there such a tool that I could utilize
to access the NTFS drive and perhaps then XCOPY the files
to the network share?? Thanks! BP

No.

Just boot from the Windows 2000 CD-ROM and do a Manual Repair,

Other than repairing or a parallel install (if disk is good) you could
get an adapter and connect the notebook drive to a desktop unit to
recover files.

I don't know of any pre-assembled boot disks such as you ask for. I'm
sure one could be hand-built, but there are easier ways to recover
those files.

You can create a DOS network boot disk using MS Network Client
(ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/softlib/mslfiles/MSWGCN.EXE) or maybe Barts
Network Boot Disk (http://www.nu2.nu/bootdisk/network/). However,
getting the boot disk network settings right can sometimes be a bit
trying.

Once you have that sorted out, you can run sysinternals NTFSDOS. The
free version provides read only access to NTFS drives from DOS.

Rember that you won't have access to LFNs so the repair route already
suggested would probably be the better option.

If you already visit Bart Jagerwej's site www.nu2.nu for the network
boot disk, sidestep to http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ You will have to
build and burn a cd, but you gain direct ntfs and network acces.

A non free solution is Acronis Trueimage. You are also able to prepare
a bootable cd (on a similar pc) which allows network and ntfs support.

If you can get hands on a halfway actual Knoppix-cd www.knopper.net you
have a third cd-based solution which is also free.

Of course all this is best done before a failure event.
