Win2000 Installation

I have installed Win2000 on an older PC. The main problem was that
the cdrom was not bootable. I finally had to install Win/NT4 using
the 3 floppy's & the CD. From there I upgraded to Win2000.

The problem is that Win/NT4's setup will not format a partition for
the c: drive any larger than 3GB.

I can get around this by installing programs to e:\Program Files

Is there any way to combine the two partitions on my hard drive into
one partition or is there any way to install Win/2000 from a real
Microsoft CD keeping in mind that the PC's bios does NOT SUPPORT a
bootable CD?

You would then have to use boot diskettes together with the W2k CD, as were
normally supplied with that CD. Or you can create them from the CD.

You also need a BIOS that minimally supports the HDD size you intend to
use.

Boot the floppies. To do a clean install, either boot the Windows 2000
install CD-Rom or setup disks. The set of four install disks can be created
from your Windows 2000 CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the
CD-Rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and
follow the prompts.

Setup inspects your computer's hardware configuration and then begins to
install the Setup and driver files. When the Windows 2000 Professional
screen appears, press ENTER to set up Windows 2000 Professional.

Read the license agreement, and then press the F8 key to accept the terms of
the license agreement and continue the installation.

When the Windows 2000 Professional Setup screen appears, all the existing
partitions and the unpartitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard
disk. Use the ARROW keys to select the partitions Press D to delete an
existing partition, If you press D to delete an existing partition, you must
then press L (or press ENTER, and then press L if it is the System
partition) to confirm that you want to delete the partition. Repeat this
step for each of the existing partitions When all the partitions are deleted
press F3 to exit setup, (to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with
your new install) then restart the pc then when you get to this point in
setup again select the unpartitioned space, and then press C to create a new
partition and specify the size (if required). Windows will by default use
all available space.

Be sure to apply these to your new install before connecting to any network.

Dave

Combining the two partitions won't do you much good, because
your apps are now on drive E: and the registry is full of references
to drive E:.

Booting a machine from the CD drive is fairly easy, if you have
the appropriate tools. Here is what I recommend:

1. Temporarily install the disk as a slave disk in some other
Win2000/XP PC.
2. Create a primary & active NTFS partition for Win2000.
Label it Win2000.
2. Create a 15 MByte primary or logical FAT partition at
the far end. Label it XOSL.
3. Boot the machine with a Win98 boot disk (www.bootdisk.com).
I recommend you do a clean boot, without any extra drivers.
4. Install the XOSL boot manager in the XOSL partition, complete
with the Ranish boot manager. You can get it from here:
http://www.volny.cz/xosl/archcz/xosl115/. It's free.
5. Reboot the machine, then add the Win2000 partition to the
XOSL boot menu.
6. Add the Smart Boot Manager to the XOSL boot menu. It
will give you an option to boot from your CD when selected.
7. Reboot the machine, then select the CD boot option. You
can now boot from the Win2000 CD.

You can disable XOSL any time by booting the machine
with your Win98 boot disk, then running this command:

fdisk /mbr

You can re-enable XOSL by running Step 4 above, telling
the program that you wish to restore XOSL.

Post again if you need more details.

seems too complicated for a simple task
would go with dave on this one and install from the 2000 disks
will let you format the partition as NTFS without the NT 4gb limitation

Dave, I need help. I completly repartitioned and reformated my cpu. I had
windows 98 and I was trying to upgrade to windows 2000 pro. The windows 2000
pro install keeps stating that I do not have a earlier version of windows to
verify that I am authorized to upgrade. Give me a brake. I have been
working on this for 6 hours straight.

If you have a Win2000 upgrade CD then the installation
process will prompt you for the qualifying CD. In other
words, when the installation process asks you to insert
your Win98 CD, do so!

There are three possible reasons for your problem:
- The CD is not a genuine qualifying CD, or
- The CD is damaged, or
- The CD drive is marginal

Pegasus, thank you for your help. The CD is brand new out the box. I know
it works, because I first tried to install it over my w98 and it went through
all the steps correctly to include the product id key. I stoped the install
because I wanted to create just two partitions on my drives. But before I
used FDISK and FORMAT, I did create a w98 boot floopy.

I tried D:\i386\winnt.exe, this opened and asked for the source where
windows 2000 files were. I chose d: and it took 20 minutes to remove old
temp files and now it is loading win2000 files. I have done this before and
I am going to try it again.

Any thoughts?

There's no reason to use fdisk. Just boot the CD-Rom to start the
installation. Windows 2000 setup can delete/create partitions. NTFS is the
native file system of Windows 2000 and is always recommended.
