Win 2000 freezes if I don't touch my computer for about 30-120 min. However
as long as I work on my computer everything runs without any problems
If the computer freezes there can be nothing be done except turning it off.
Even if I just rebooted the computer and leave it at without even logging
on, the computer freezes.

I tried following already:
- Setup (BIOS): Turned of the Energy safe option
- Operating System: Turned of Engergy safe options
(Monitor turn off: never,
Harddisk turn off: never,
Standbymodus: never)

Thanks for any help.

I am having the exact same problem.

No screensavers in use. Fully up to date virus defs and regular scans. All
updates installed including SP4 (although was also happening with SP3).
Machine locks up and cannot be accessed directly or remotely. All network
activity stops.

Never happens while I am using the machine. Only when I leave the room. I
suspect alien involvement or a plot by Iraqi terrorists or my mother in law,
but any help would be great.

:)

I even installed SP5. I'm pretty sure it's not your mother in law since we
are not related. I also would cut out Iraqi involvement since I'm from a
neutral country. What's left?

Ok , this is very bizarre ..!!

I recommend to re-install your software without any
Service Packs.(Only the SP2)
then see what is happening.
If this is continuing then leave the case of your machine
open and look at your fans.!It might freeze because the
CPU is getting hot.

GOOD LUCK.!

Go into Device Manager and look at Properties, Power Management for
mouse and keyboard and see if the system can turn them off.

I can't find any indication that either the mouse or the keyboard have any
power management settings. Certainly not in their hardware settings, or in
the APM settings. Is there somewhere else I should be looking?

Interesting thought, but if it was the CPU overheating (or any overheating)
I don't think it would happen only when the PC is idle. I use my PC most of
the day, and it only freezes when I am not using it.

Also, I am not prepared to accept the "Microsoft Support" advice to
reinstall the O/S and start from scratch (not saying you are MS Support,
just that this is typically their advice). MS Support have told me to do
this so many times over the years and I find it is only relevant to people
who set up machines for display purposes. As soon as you start to use the
machine for something (i.e. add applications), you go outside the relevance
parameters of this advice. Perhaps if the machine becomes completely
unuseable I'll give it more consideration.

BTW, my other machine (a laptop) is running SP3 and does not freeze on its
own accord. But yesterday it froze in the middle of a reboot at exactly the
same moment as the desktop locked up. Coincidence? Or is there some network
activity involved here too? I run peer LAN with ICS.

The screensaver is turned off.
No virus is detected.

I wonder if your hd bay be going. There's the (wild guess) theory.
You have a bad sector in your disk, and when disk indexing service runs
across it, the comp freezes.

So turn off disk indexing service and see if it stops.

Here's the general purpose laundry list.

chkdsk /r /f (physical hd problems)
you may want to download the disk diagnosis util form your hd manufacterer.

sfc /scannow (corrupted/missing system files)

Listen up my friend...I haven`t seen any of this kind of a
problem before...!!!
When the computer is in IDLE Mode it runs some dummy
process. The processor never stops from running.
So I end up in this conclusion: Something which is running
on a background is causing your system to freeze.!

1] TRY leaving a Screen Saver on and see what is
happeninig.
Leave only the screen saver on and do nothing else.

2] Try forcing your CPU to run on high ground by using the
well-known : dir/s command
Make a batch file , put the above command in the batch
file and then call this file over and over again.

3] Run Task manager and remove every process that you
think that is from another program.(you must be
experienced to do that).

4] If nothing happens then uninstall SP3.(I hope you
install this with backup option)

GOOD LUCK.!

Power Management would be on a tab in hardware properties.

Example Tabs for mouse
General-Advanced Settings-Driver-Resources-Power Management

there are 2 check boxes
Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby.
and
Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.

Now IF the computer can SHUT down the Mouse and Keyboard to save power,
it's going to be tough to do anything with the box after that.

Same Problem - did you ever solve it?

I have been having the exact problem for about two weeks now. - older machine, PIII w/current bios and 512 ram, Have cable broadband, actually runs fast, win2000 sp4 current drivers on everything, bare minimum at startup, no unnecessary processes running, did chkdsk, CPU temp is normal, room on hard drives, etc... If I am doing something on it, it never freezes even for 10 or 15 hours! I can be running many memory hog programs at once and no problem! But about 1-2 hours after I quit using it, it freezes.
I have disabled Network and unplugged network cable, booted up to login without logging in and still the same - freezes after about 1 - 2 hours! About the only thing I haven't tried is to boot to DOS, but I can't find my old DOS Boot Floppy Disk (haven't seen it for years!). I've seen this problem posted on a few boards but nobody ever seems post what actually fixed it! If you found a fix please post!
