Hi

I have a friend with a problem. He have a system with win2000pro, and a user
(your name) with a blank password. The windows was configured to don't show
login screen. He never have connected the machine in a network.

Last night he needed to connect his machine in a network and changed the
"workgroup" setting. After that, and now, windows always shows the login
screen asking for his password, but the blank password doesn't works anymore
!!!

He doesn't create any other user, so he just can't have access to his
machine.

Someone can help ?

Thanks

Luiz

Ask your friend to talk to his System Administrator.
His machine must now be re-registered on the domain,
and only an administrator can do this.

Thank you pegasus.

The problem is that he is not in a network anymore. He is using win2k in a
notebook He connected to another computer just once, to share some files,
and he doesn't know the administrator password.

His black password is now ignored by windows ? What happens ? If he doesn't
know the administrator password he can't logon in windows anymore ?

Thanks

Luiz

This sounds suspicious. Was it perhaps that your
friend's computer belonged to a company, and
that it somehow found its way into your friend's
hands?

Hi Pegasus

No. He doesn't know de administrator password because the win2k came pre
installed. The problem is very easy to reproduce.

Just take a win2k and a user with a blank password and that never have
connected in a network

Mark the option to windows don't ask user and password

Now everthing works fine. But if you change the "workgroup" and put a
network cable, after a boot the login screen is showed and the blank
password doesn't works anymore.

If I know any other user password different from black, I can log without
any problem. But in my friend's case, he is just a basic computer user, and
he never worry about administrator passwords or anything like that.

What we wanna know is if the windows change de black password to something
easy to know, or may be the default password to administrator, because he
never change it, so it must be the default value.

Thanks pegasus

Your friend is rather shortsighted if he uses Win2000
with its well-developed security features and does not
worry about passwords. It is like owning a car with a
good alarm system and not worrying much about the
secret code. Sooner or later he will be caught. In the
case of Windows, the answer is obvious: Create two
admin accounts, and lock their passwords away.

To reset the password you can use this tool. It is
scary but it works.
