I'm trying to upgrade my Win 2000 pro system to Win XP pro. I purchased a Win
Xp pro OEM package for good money, but when I try to install, it presents a
pupup boxe that tells me "Windows 200 Pro cannot be upgraded to Windows XP
pro"

I cannot do a fresh install, since I will lose lterally thousands on non-
portable licenses.

OEM versions by nature cannot do upgrades, they are meant to be
installed on new computers, computers without any operating systems, or
at least computers without Microsoft operating systems, hence their name
"Original Equipment Manufacturer".

Thanks John. Can I assume then that if I purchase a full XP
(non-oem)Professional that I should be able to upgrade?

Bill

Yes, a full Retail XP Professional can upgrade a Windows 2000
installation. The XP Professional Upgrade version can also upgrade
Windows 2000. Don't get a HOME Edition, Windows 2000 *cannot* be
upgraded to XP Home.

Okay, I made the upgrade, but the result is flaky. It keeps poping up
"Starting to Install" or "you must complete the previous install" . Very
unspecific. What install? It also hangs during shutdowns or when doing
required upgrades. I tried reinstalling.

Upgrades can fail for a variety of reasons. If the installation that
you are trying to upgrade had existing problems the upgrade may be
flaky. Third party software and services running in the background can
also cause problems, you should make sure that those programs and
services are not running, disable antivirus programs before you try to
upgrade. Make sure that only necessary hardware is plugged in when you
do the upgrade, you only need the monitor, mouse and keyboard plugged in
the computer when you install, unplug all other external hardware. If
you can't get reliable results with the upgrade then you will have to do
a clean install.
