You Know Who ~

I am buying a new computer and will take a few components out of the current
computer (running win xp). I have heard that if you take stuff out windows
will assume that its been moved and will have to be re-activated.

I have upgraded the current computer with memory about a year ago and will
take out one hard drive and a soundcard.
What can be taken out without Windows XP requiring re-activation.

Thanks in advance.

hi,

I had this problem but I just called up the Microsoft activation phone
number (on the screen which pops up and asks for activation) and they
were quite happy to take me through the steps to reactivate it -
basically they have me a huge number after I read out the product ID
and that was all there was to it....

It's difficult to say exactly what hardware changes will prompt
reactivation. I've had the screen pop up by merely adding an sata card.
But the good news is that when the screen prompts you to reactivate you
might be able to do it over the internet - or just call the phone number on
the screen and do it over the phone.

The MS folks are pretty good about issuing a new activation number if you
explain what hardware changes were made (new card, new harddrive etc)

I think Internet activation usually works if that particular XP installation
hasn't been activated within the last 120 days. This is for retail XP. It's my
understanding the OEM version can't be re-activated except by phone — if at all
— once it "tilts."

And legally they get no choice with removal of components, and they know it.
