Please Help!!

I told my brother that I could clean up his computer by rebooting his
computer with a startup disk and it should alleviate all his problems.
However, he was running XP home but had the XP home edition "upgrade" CD
only. I did not notice before the reboot that he did not have the original
startup CD of Windows ME. I made a major mistake of installing windows xp
pro from one of my computers and I was going to use his registry and
activation keys from his computer. Now that I have installed the XP prof.,
of course it will not accept the registry/activation key on the side of his
computer for the XP home upgrade.

Now that i have confused you just as much as i am confused, maybe i can
attempt and tell you what i think i need. I need a way to install this
computer's original OS of Windows ME (which I do not have the disk for) and
use the registry key on the side of the computer for ME. Then I need to
install WindowsXp home edition upgrade disk (which I do have the disk) and
use the registry key on the side of the computer for XP upgrade. Currently,
I have XP Pro installed and I can not activate it. So it should shut down on
me in 30 days.

Also, im curious, is the activation key the same thing as the registry key
on the side of the computer?

Please Help!!

Thaks in advance

To reinstall Windows Me, you're going to need the original installation
media, which isn't something that someone on a newsgroup is going to be able
to help you find. If it's a regular installation cd, rather than some sort
of restore CD, you don't have to actually install it, you just need the disk
for verification when you install XP. Chances are, though, you've got the
restore-type cd. You might be able to get a replacement from the computer
manufacturer, probably for a fee.

Your next problem is that you'll need cd key for XP, which is probably not
on the side of the computer, unless someone peeled it off of the cardboard
container that the upgrade CD came in, and then taped that to the side of
the case. Not many people would do that. The sticker on the side, if it came
with the computer is for the original OS, which you said is ME; that's not
going to work with XP.

As far as the words "activation key" and "registry key" I guess you can
define them to mean whatever you want. For most people, a registry key in an
entry in the registry, it's not a sticker or a code. An "activation key" has
no standard meaning meaning. Most people would call the code that on the
sticker (and this is the 25-digit code that you use to install XP) the
product key. The sticker is often called the Certificate of Authenticity or
COA.
