Will updates and patches for the RC versions stop once the "Gold" version is
released, making it necessary to purchase the retail version, or go back to
the 32 bit version, or will the RC be updated to the Gold upon release if
you have it installed? Will RC users be able to buy an "upgrade" vs the full
retail?

Once Windows XP professional x64 goes 'Gold' the updates and patches
will START.

There are no updates or patches for RC1! When it's 'Gold' you will have
to do a "clean" install to ensure the system functions correctly.

At the moment Microsoft says x64 will only be available as an OEM
package. There will be no upgrade.

What is the extent of built-in hardware driver support in the build?

I tried to install it, but I had to resign just at the beginning because no
64BIT SATA driver from the MB manufacturer was available .....
So I have to wait some time :-(

Good Luck !

What board chipset do you have and what SATA chip are you connected to?
There are 64-bit drivers for most of the SATA chips!

Alas, I'm having issues with my A8V Deluxe /AMD 3500 installing this build.
It worked perfectly last time but now, during a virgin install, I'm getting
a BSOD/IRQ_Less_than error. Ugh.

I'm pretty sure I saw your same problem over in the MS news group for
Windows x64.

The motherboard is an ASROCK K8S8X.

Sorry, I don't know the chip-type

Have a nice day !

Have you done any research or tried to find drivers and stuff? Do you
have the manual for your board?

I discovered that if you either read the manual or go to the Asrock web
site you will discover exactly what is on your board. Primarily it has
a SiS chipset and they have 64-bit drivers listed on their site:

http://download.sis.com/index.php

You will also be able to exchange information with others that have your
same board if you go to the Windows newgroups, which has information and
a link on the x64 web site.

If you're new to computers, you need to do a little homework and learn
about computers or you will be sorely disappointed when things don't go
right.

I know I could provide you with all the information, but you're the one
that needs to learn.

All very well, but you need a 1.44 floppy to install them onto. My PC
does not have this, and XP 64's older than my granny text mode install
can only load 3rd party drivers from A:\

Thanks for trying to help me.
I only made a statement for the fellow who was interested in installing XP64. I
told him, what happened to me, just when I started my installation.
When I was asked during the XP64-istallation to load the 64-bit SATA-driver, I
could not provide it in that moment.
This happened about a month ago when the PC was brand-new.. As I needed the new
PC, I changed my mind and installed again my 32 BIT XP.
Right now it is impossible for me, to switch to XP64. Maybe now a 64BIT SATA
driver is already available from ASROCK.
Probably I will test XP64 within the next days, but using an IDE HD, which I
still have. But then I don't need the driver :-)
Of course I am curious how the 64BIT system works.
But I will use DUAL boot then ....

Thanks again !

By chance are you installing the AI Booster software and also have the
Cool&Quiet enabled in the BIOS? Although I didn't get a BSOD with XP64 but
I did get serveral with XP32 until I either disabled Cool&Quiet or did not
install AI Booster. Some kind of conflict happens. Cool&Quiet drops the
3500+ from it's 2.2GHz down to 1GHz but AI Booster's job is to do automatic
overclocking when a program needs it. Kind of like having two kids pulling
on your arms one way and then the other.

Sorry, my last statement probably doesn't apply since yours is a VIA
chipset. Got confused over the A8V verses the A8N.

Of course. XP64 is BETA software. Even RC1. You should never have this kind
of software as main OS, much less only OS, always use it along with some
safe one.
But I will use DUAL boot then ....

There is no shortcoming to this unless you have two PCs and you install XP64
on the "lab" one.
