I've been running the WinXP x64 os for several weeks and have noticed
some peculiarities and want to know if anyone else is experienceing
similar issues.

1) Notepad just wont run. Not with direct launch from start menu, double
click file or right click to open with.

2) Other programs have similar problems on double click or right click
launch.

3) Programs like Excel and Word hang when trying to perform ops such as
bolding text.

My setup is as follows.

AMD 64 3000+
Soltek SL-K8TPro-939
nVidia 5200 AGP Card (Rosewill)
2x512MB Ram (Kingston)
2X120GB SATA Drive (Samsung)
4X DVD (NEC)

Outside of these issues, the machine screams. Just a little concerned
about something Microsoft is calling RC2 having these types of issues.

Basil...

if simple programs like excel, word and the simplest of all, notepad burp ..
then how the heck is that o/s going to run something like a big game like
unreal tournament or say a large CAD package ?+

MS wrote the O/S -- if it's own apps don't run on it, how are 3rd party apps
going to make it ?

I have been running WinXP x64 since last March and I have not
experienced any of the problems you note.

I am on my 4th version right now, v.1433, RC2.

What motherboard do you have? As far as I know, there are 64-bit
drivers for all the current SATA chips.

Eric might consult postings in the x64 devoted newsgroup on the MS
server accessible via
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/64bit/x64/trial/support.mspx

I may quote from my posting of 29-1-05 18:05 to this newsgroup as
following:

"For installing RC1 on a S-ATA hard disk, ASRock K8S8X with chipset SiS
755, you have to use a driver via F6 from

http://download.sis.com/download_st...e=2&category=12&subcategory=125&os=5&x=10&y=3

In the SIS RAID driver package raid302a.zip you will find a folder for
making the driver floppy disk - look there and fumble around...;-)
You need a driver with the NTamd64 decoration - see posting from
Darrell Gorter [MSFT] of 26.1.05 19:11 - which you will find in that
package."

(The last sentence providing the key;-)

soltek 754 pin - has the southbridge and northbridge VIA chipsets for mem
and SATA / RAID audio , etc.

so it's a VIA driver or a Soltek driver ?

The problems aren't with Windows, they are with the nVidia graphics
drivers. Turn off the nVidia desk top and everthing will start working.
I think you can also go into nVidia desktop and select specific
applications to exclude from it's control.
