win xp wont find any dvd or cd writers

i cant write onto a cd or dvd because windows says that my dvd drive is a
standard cd rom ive been trying to find the reason why for hours and i have
downloaded the drivers and repeatedly installed them but it just keeps saying
the same thing can someone please help i dont know what else to do
