Hi,

I've just set up my network today, and I've noticed a
small problem involving files sent over the network.

First of all, this computer is running Windows XP("number
1"), and the one I connected to is running Windows 98
("number 2"). All my shares show up in My Network Places
and Network Neighbourhood.

If I try to copy, cut or execute a file on computer 2
from computer 1, I have no problem. However, if I try it
the other way around, it doesn't work. Also, trying to
paste a file onto computer 2 from computer 1 doesn't
work. It stalls for a bit, and then I am given an error
message saying that the network resource is no longer
available.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

In W98 you give rights to anyone that has the password.
You also give them read or full access rights. In XP you
grant permission to individuals that connect to the XP
computer and give very specific rights. You can create
below this point but not above this point type of thing.
XP is very sofisticated. Hope I spelled that right.

Look at the sharing rights on your XP machine. You should
create a user in XP that has the same name and password as
the user who is logged into your Windows 98 machine. This
should solve your problem.

If you have XP Home Edition, the advice that other people have given
to look at file permissions and user accounts doesn't apply. It might
apply if you have XP Professional.

Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on both computers, as
shown here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)

It's possible that the shortcuts in My Network Places on computer 1
have gone bad. Right click and delete them, then use "Add a network
place" to re-create them.

I do have Win XP Home, so I only tried your advice,
Steve. Unfortunately, it didn't work. Computer 2 crashes
whenever I try to access files from Computer 1, but it's
fine the other way around. What else can I do?
