Windows is urging me to install SP3 but I have been reading horror stories
about it. What's the story? Download and install it? Wait for Microsoft
to get it right? Or such it up and let SP3 rip?
You might look for messages with 'SP3' in the header. Its been discussed
endlessly. Its getting close to a year old now. Most people don't
have issues with it. You see a lot of issues here because this is
where you complain. I did 3 machines and all worked. Others state
they have updated hundreds. If you backup and read and head all the
prep, you have a better chance of it working. Download it manually and
install it manually.
PS: Microsoft will never "get it right" as you say. And that's not a
slander even though it is a good play on words. SP3 is SP3. Always
will be and will never change. So holding out for that is a loss. If
they got something wrong, they'll just make patches to add onto SP3.
SP3 has more in it than the SP2 + updates. There are a lot of
unreleased hotfixes that are included. In theory this makes your
system better. (whatever that means). There is a list of fixes if you
are interested.
Obviously I suggest your make an image backup of your system and load
it. Not only is an image and an imaging program a good backup method,
but if something goes haywire, its a great tool to return the system to
your previous state. Yeah yeah there's a restore point etc, but I like
the image backup, I know everything gets reset right.
