Windows is urging me to install SP3 but I have been reading horror stories
about it. What's the story? Download and install it? Wait for Microsoft
to get it right? Or such it up and let SP3 rip?

If auto -update is running in XP,then you already have alot of SP3
components, complete the process & install..SP3 isnt the monster SP2 was...

Windows is urging me to install SP3

Quite rightly so!
You'll need to upgrade to SP3 or in the not-so-distant future you won't be
able receiving security updates/patches for your WinXP operating system.
but I have been reading horror stories about it.

You've got to follow the *right* procedures!
What's the story? Download and install it?

Definitely!

Microsoft got it right already!
Or such it up and let SP3 rip?

You might look for messages with 'SP3' in the header. Its been discussed
endlessly. Its getting close to a year old now. Most people don't
have issues with it. You see a lot of issues here because this is
where you complain. I did 3 machines and all worked. Others state
they have updated hundreds. If you backup and read and head all the
prep, you have a better chance of it working. Download it manually and
install it manually.

PS: Microsoft will never "get it right" as you say. And that's not a
slander even though it is a good play on words. SP3 is SP3. Always
will be and will never change. So holding out for that is a loss. If
they got something wrong, they'll just make patches to add onto SP3.

SP3 has more in it than the SP2 + updates. There are a lot of
unreleased hotfixes that are included. In theory this makes your
system better. (whatever that means). There is a list of fixes if you
are interested.

Obviously I suggest your make an image backup of your system and load
it. Not only is an image and an imaging program a good backup method,
but if something goes haywire, its a great tool to return the system to
your previous state. Yeah yeah there's a restore point etc, but I like
the image backup, I know everything gets reset right.

It's already happened. Once you have installed SP3, you will find a whole
raft of updates that become available.

Whenever *anything* new comes out, there are always *some* people who
have problems with it. Despite how few they are, they are always the
most vocal. Nobody posts messages to newsgroups saying he had no
problems.

What's the story? Download and install it?

Certainly.

There is nothing to wait for. It has been released and it is not going
to change.

Or such it up and let SP3 rip?

I've deployed it on well over 1000+ workstations now and over 75 home
user PCs with zero issues. I would suggest downloading the full file
and installing it in Safe Mode though if you have any worries. It's
least likely to give you issues that way. The horror stories I've
heard were from people who've loaded their machines with all manner of
crap and garbage software so as to render their existing installation
near useless and then they blame the SP3 update for their problems.
Please. There's nothing wrong with the update.

Consider these facts:

1. Millions have already installed SP3 successfully and have not encountered
any problems whatsoever.

2. If SP3 isn't installed by next year (2010), the machine will not be
offered any further critical security updates.

3. The free installation and compatibility support for WinXP SP3 (only) ends
in early April.

Advice: Get SP3 installed ASAP!

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3) and *only until* 14 Apr-09.
