Do all of the retail copies of the XP Home Upgrade and the
XP Pro Upgrade contain SP1 these days? I want to upgrade
from Win98 and would like to get SP1 as part of the clean
install, not have to download and install separately later
since I see others sometimes having problems with the SP1
install.

My guess is all the non-SP1 Windows XP CDs have been sold
months ago, so the likelihood of purchasing a retail version of
Windows XP with SP1 is quite high. Unfortunately, there is
no wording on the retail box to indicate if SP1 is included.

Yes, most likely unless you purchase from a web store that has old
stock. I purchased my copy of Home from Best Buy three months ago and
it came with SP-1 already included. Just look on the outside of the
retail box. I don't know about OEM copies.

Your chances of getting one with SP1 are probably very good, but
there's no guarantee that wherever you buy it doesn't have some
older stock around.

First, those people who have complained about problems with SP1
are in the great minority. They are just more vocal than those
without problems, since the latter group doesn't come to places
like this newsgroup looking for help with non-existent problems.
I've installed SP1 on a number of machines and have had *no*
problems doing so.

Second, if you were to have a problem with SP1, I'm not at all
convinced that it would be avoided by buying a copy with SP1
already installed instead of installing it separately.

If I were in your shoes, I'd just go head and get it. You'll
probably get SP1 already installed, but worst case if you had to
download and install it separately, it's highly unlikely that
doing so will result in a problem.
