Win XP slow

Lisa C.

I have a Dell running WinXP home. It's pentium 4
1500MHz, 1.50 GHz, 128MB RAM. It runs very slow. I'm
thinking more RAM would help. Do you agree? Thanks.

XP does like RAM and 256 is minimal. More = better. (I
run 512).

Other things to consider regarding slow operation are
viruses, spyware, etc. There's no point in having a fast
machine if you leave it unprotected for other people to
use for their own purposes.

Do you have the XP firewall activated or are you already
behind a router/firewall or do you run an aftermarket
product such as Zone Alarm? (the basic, but adequate, Zone
Alarm is free).

Do you have a good anti-virus program that you update and
use (at least) weekly?

Have you installed all the applicable Microsoft updates?
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
(sometimes after you get to this site you have to refresh
your browser before the complete screen appears).

Ad-Aware and SpyBot can be found via Google. Both are
freeware. Update and use both daily.

I noticed in my Norton System Works it says that my
system's memory utilization is 51% and swap file
utilization is 61% so I'm assuming the 256MB more RAM I
ordered will help?

Thanks.

Depends on your definition of slow. However XP runs
much
better with 256megs.
