win xp shutting down automatically

hy

i'm experiencing some problem with my win xp (home ver)
lately. there is no specific application that i'm
running when it just shuts down. as far as i remember,
these were the few applications (and maybe others that i
don't recall): ie6, dazzle softwares, nero..

it usually gives me this blue error screen (maybe fatal
error?) and it just restart itself. i didn't even get
the opportunity to read what it said. other than auto
restart, it'll freeze for no reason and even ctrl+alt+del
doesn't do it. i'd have to use the restart button..

the only changes i made in the last few days were,
upgraded the memory and swapped a slave drive. i
originally had two pc2100 128mb (for each mem chip) simm
and i added one pc2100 512mb dimm.. i placed the 512mb
chip in bank1 and the other two in bank2 and bank3.. as
for the hdd, the master drive remained unchanged. i only
swapped the slave hdd (removed one that contained files
with a blank one). the blank hdd (jumper set for slave
and ide is on slave) was boot up with win98 fdisk and
formatted w/o partition. i didn't look to see if my
memory voltage are the same or not.

please help! thanks!!

Hi,

First thing I would do is return to the ram to its original configuration.
If it goes away, then you know what to blame. The new is either incompatible
with the existing or it's faulty.

Start/run eventvwr.msc and check the system and application logs for any
fault codes. I suspect any you find will be related to a faulty ram
configuration.

hello

thanks for the info. should i swap the slave hdd back to
orig or that doesn't matter?

btw, this auto shut down happens mostly when i'm using
ie6. however, it shuts down in other applications as
well, but not as frequently as in ie6. i never turn my
comp off. when i woke up this morning, i know it didn't
shut down during the night automatically cause when my
comp powers up, my aim login screen should be up.

thanks

Hi,

No, I would concentrate on the ram. Unless you don't have the hard drive
configured correctly, that should matter.
