My laptop PC errantly reports the amount of installed RAM. I've had to open my laptop and physically reset the RAM card 3 times this week. Why is this happening?

Hi

Click Start/ Run/ and type in MSCONFIG , click the BOOT.INI tab.
Click on the Advanced Options button and see if there is an entry in the /MAXMEM=box.
If so, erase it and clear the checkbox

I checked the BOOT.INI but there was nothing in the MAXMEM= box. Again I had to reset the RAM card. Why would it be reset whenever the PC is turned off? Please help

I'm having the same problem, with my desk top, it is only reporting 512
when it should be 1024. I've also check the Maxmen and it will only go
as high as 512, when I put in 1024 as soon as i go to check the ok box
it changes back to 512

The motherboard may ONLY support up to 512mb ram
Dennis.

You can't / wont get 1GB if your mobo can't
handle that amount of ram. You'll have to find out
what brand/make your motherboard is, and the maximum
amount of ram it can take. Under the boot.ini Mat
type in the switch /3gb after /fastdetect. See what that does.

I'm still having the original problem of my laptop resetting to the base RAM setting of 64MB. I actually have 192MB(I know, it's a bit of a dinosaur). Anyway, why would it occasionally do so? This is the question of this string
