Hi Steve,

Unfortunately, for me, this article was not helpful.

I'm not sure about the original poster's problem, but mine
has proved insensitive to simple stuff like "change slots"
or "install correct LAN adapter driver". In fact, on one
system, completely uninstalling one NIC and installing a
second one using a different hardware interface (USB vs
PCI, wirless vs. wired) had no effect. And, as I
mentioned in my other reply, the router and XP are both
reporting physical LAN connection - it's the logical (TCP)
connection that's a no-go.

Thanks,
- Greg

Hi Ken,

I did not delete WinSock2 (to my knowledge), although I
might have tried to do so if I knew how to do so safely.
If I did so accidentally, certainly reinstalling XP Pro
would have fixed it? (But, did not.)

How do I obtain and re-install this file correctly?

Thanks,
- Greg

Deleting the Winsock2 key is part of your problem. Did you save a backup?

Ditto with me - I've encountered two very different XP Pro
systems with this problem over last month. Checked with
friendly dealer who says this problem drives him to
distraction. On Win9x I'd uninstall & reinstall TCP
stack, but cannot do so with XP!

Installing or uninstalling SPs and/or hotfixes has no
effect - nor does running netsh. Only fix on machine #1
was rolling back OS to earlier date. Machine #2: this did
not work, nor did re-installing XP Pro fix anything.

Problem seems to come down to TCP stack being unable to
initiate any comm over LAN. Don't have sniffer (or
access), but router lights and connection info in XP both
suggest proper physical connection. But, can't do DHCP
check over TCP (though others on same router can).
Symptom is that packets are sent, but none are received
(according to connection status panel on XP Pro system).

Tried checking for dependancies/services that didn't load
(the Norton/McAfee bad uninstall problem) - nope.

You know, if a lot of people are seeing this, there ought
to be some KB article on the subject, but I can't find
anything relevant.

Also looking for ideas...
