Hello all!

Towards the end of SP2's self installation, there is sp2.cab. With this file
installation balks and a message comes up:

"CRC failed" and the install software closes.

I updated the BIOS, changed the Video card (for eventual memory defects),
checked all hard drived for bad sectors, changed all memory sticks with
verified sticks, took out all other cards. Everything checked out OK. The
only component not checked is the processor itself (Athlon XP 1600). I
mention that I have the same components (processor and MoBo included with
same BIOS update) in another computer where SP2 installs without a hitch.

What could be wrong? What do programs in sp2.cab check that balk it?

Thanks

Thanks, Jupiter.

I thought about your question ahead of time, I tried to install SP2 on the
other computer and it did without any difficulty. I also tried other software
to install on the
computer in question to check the CD player. No problems. However, I'll do
another download of SP2 and put it on another CD though to see what happens.

I am still curious what programs in sp2.cab do parity (CRC) checking.

If the burn is "borderline" the CRC error may be coming up because the
drive on the problem computer is more picky or it's not as good as the one
on the other computer.

I think the CRC is an automatic check by installer (Windows installer
maybe?) when unpacking any compressed files - zips, cabs, installation
packages, etc. Wild theory (but based on what I've seen my burning programs
do): Could be third party burning software stepping in and checking too.
Depends on how the program "hooks" when a CD is inserted and how "nosey" it
is while using that CD.

Thanks, Sharon.

Downloading was executed through a wideband connection to a Dell Pentium4
2600Mhz computer and burning by WinXP Home's automatic burner call program.
The CD drive on the computer in question is a Yamaha high quality CD
burner/player. It may be the "picky" one. Interestingly, I tried to copy SP2
from the CD onto both hard drives in the computer, both times with the same
CRC message, aborting the copy.

Yours, Sylva.
