A friend of mine has a Mesh machine with win xp home on it which is really
playing up so he was going to use his restore disk to take it back to
factory settings. however in the meantime he has bought a win xp pro
disk(with a DELL stamp on it) from someone on Ebay. If he puts the disk in
will it give him the opportunity to reformat and install win XP pro from
scratch or will it just upgrade and leave his machine still in a mess?
Many thanks

The WinXP install will offer a reformat option, yes. Unfortunately,
the Dell OEM XP may not install properly on a non-Dell. OEM software
is generally restricted to install only on computers of the OEM brand.
There could be licensing issues too.

Greetings --

As is well known, Dell OEM installation CDs are BIOS-locked, and
will not install (or rather, should not, by design) on any computer
other than the one for which it was designed.

You friend needs to file a complaint with eBay, and his local law
enforcement agency; he has been defrauded.
