Hello,

I am using Win XP Pro on a laptop. The profile is huge.
I have no idea why it is so big. I checked most of the
folders and it appears none of them are that large. My
profile folder is over 500 MG. Has anyone had this
problem? Does anyone have any ideas how I can fix this?
I used explore from the start menu to view my user
account under doc and settings. Is there somewhere else
I should look?

You probably mean 500MB.

By default, Internet Explorer uses a rather huge amount of space for
Temporary Internet Files. Fortunately, this is configurable: Open Internet
Explorer and navigate to Tools > Internet Options > General tab (it's the
first tab). Click the Settings button under Temporary Internet Files
and...gasp!

The reason you may be unable to see the files is the
settings under folder options. The you can view hidden
folders when you are exploring the computer by going to
the Menu Bar and: Tools, Folder Options, View, and
check 'Show Hidden Files and Folders' and uncheck "Hide
protected operating system files'.

Vince,

Many folks I work with have made the mistake of dropping documents
onto the desktop, or into a menu, instead of creating shortcuts. A
few good sized documents anywhere in your profile will make your
profile grow quite rapidly.

Whenever I have any questions about disk usage, I use TreeSize
(http://www.jam-software.com/treesize/index.shtml) to find the
problem.

Chuck

If you use Windows XP features to burn files onto CDR/CDRW, then Windows
uses a temporary storage area that's also in your profile by default.
Look up MS KnowledgeBase to find articles on this. I think there's one
that tells you how to change the location as well.
