Hello.
Here is my problem. first of all I have win. XP Pro. Lately about 4 or 5
times now, I work on my computer then walk away for awhile the computer is
still on, but when I return the computer turns itself off. I press the on
button, no response. I check the surge protector power strip it is on. But I
notice it's only when I turn the power strip power off then on again that I
can turn on the computer. needless to say this is driving me nuts, And we
have had no power interruption in our area. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

This newsgroup is for WMI questions, you might get more responses in a
different group.

- Are you certain the computer itself is off, and not just the monitor?

- Check your power management settings in the Control Panel -> Performance
and Maintenance -> Power Options.

- Check the System event log for errors about the system crashing (Control
Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer).

- As a test, leave Notepad.exe running with some text typed in the window,
but don't save it. If the system shuts down gracefully, it should stop at
the prompt Notepad gives about saving your data.

Thank you.

Well you will have to purchase another surge protector. YOU NEED A SURGE
PROTECTOR NOT A POWER STRIP. The problem is that you are using a POWER
STRIP instead of a surge protector.

Earl, you may have an issue with your power supply or motherboard. It
certainly sounds hardware-related. while Connor's comment about a power
strip vs a surge protector is good advice, it is probably not causing the
issue you are seeing unless you are in an area with a lot of problems... but
it may well have caused the initial problem. So yes, get a surge
protector... but also either a) save your work religiously before leaving
your computer and make do with the problem, or b) see it as a good reason to
upgrade your hardware, because your hardware is probably faulty.
