Win XP Password will expire soon?

Dumb question, but I'm sensing disaster ahead - when I
turn on the computer and the Windows environment first
appears, I get a popup that tells me "my password will
expire in X days" - currently, X = 7. I can't seem to
change this password by clicking on "change now," because
it won't accept any passwords I would have been likely to
use.
If I don't remember entering a password or what it might
be, what happens when I get to X = 0?? If I do face
disaster (i.e., I can't even get my computer to finish
booting up), is there a way to get around it?

Disable the password expiration option.

1/ Go to Control Panel
2/ Click on Administrative Tools Icon
3/ In administarive tools window click Local Security Settings
4/ Local security settings window will now open
5/ In the left hand pane of the window click on the plus sign next to
Account policies to expand the menu
6/ Click Password Policy
7/ If you look in the right hand pane you will see a list of options.
8/ Right click on the Maximum Password age option
9/ From the drop down menu select Properties
10/ The maximum password age properties window will open.
11/ By default it is set to 42 days
12/ Change this to 0 (zero)
13/ Click Apply
14/ Next click Ok to close the window
15/ Your password will now never expire
16/ Finally close the local security setting window and any other windows
that are open.
