My Mom has a Windows XP, SP3, P4, 2.6GHz, 128 Mb Ram pc. The paging file is
missing on the hard drive (no hidden files). She gets a msg when booting up
that the file is missing or too small. I checked the settings and her C:
drive is set to use a paging file, custom size (min 125, max 189). I've
tried changing settings to "system managed size" and rebooting but the file
won't create. Any ideas?

The computer is encountering problems because it has insufficient RAM to
runs today's programmes. What is the computer make and model? It is likely
that you can increase the memory to 512 mb for a modest expense.

When you change pagefile settings you need to complete by clicking on Apply
and OK before Restarting the computer.

How large is the hard drive and how much free disk space. You could also
have a problem there.

I would be interested in seeing a Disk Defragmenter report . Open Disk
Defragmenter and click on Analyse. Select View Report and click on Save
As and Save. Now find VolumeC.txt in your My Documents Folder and post a
copy. Do this before running Disk Defragmenter as it is more
informative.

Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to Empty
your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also select Start, All
Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp, More Options, System
Restore and remove all but the latest System Restore point. Run Disk
Defragmenter.

Hope this helps.

128MB may be adequate for earlier OSes like Windows 98, but certainly
not for Windows XP! Depending on the make and model of the PC, she might
be able to add more RAM to improve performace. Then again, it might make
sense for her to get another PC (even an inexpensive one from five years
ago would be far superior) or perhaps downgrade to an earlier OS if she
can't afford either more RAM or another PC.

A P4 2.6 GHz processor is certainly fast enough for XP.
Having only 128 MB of ram is way too low. You should
consider adding more ram to at least 348 MB or 512 MB.
Upgrading to 348 MB would mean keeping the existing memory
stick and adding a second 256 MB stick.

Check your hard drive for available free space, this could along
with an extremely fragmented drive be the cause of the pagefile failing
to be created.

If you are short on disk space please report back and I'll
provide some tips on cleanup the drive and how to select
the proper hard drive if you want to replace the existing
hard drive with a larger capacity drive.
