I have a bad copy of XP Pro and I would like to insert a
new and legal key. Is there a way to do this? If I have to
reload the OS and insert the new key, will I lose all my
programs? I've searched the knowledge base and found no
answers.
Thanks in advance.

I can't say with 100% certainty that you'll lose all your old programs,
but I suspect you will lose them and their data. Backup the data files
and be sure you have the CDs and keys for the applications you'll need
to reinstall, just to be safe. Also, if any files are encrypted, you'll
definitely lose access to them if you haven't backed up the encryption
key. You may find this link useful:

Mike;
Does it fit this:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=326904
If it does, you most likely have a pirated Windows XP Pro.
If it is pirated, you need to contact the seller and/or Microsoft:

One of the features of Service Pack 1 is to detect pirated copies of
windows XP.
Also you have 3 options to become legal:
1. Go back to the previous OS:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314052
This may or may not work depending on the installation options used.
2. Perform a Clean Install with the OS of your choice destroying ALL
data.
3. Purchase Windows XP Pro (Home will not work) and perform a Repair
Installation using the new valid key and CD:

An easier way to read newsgroup messages:

http://dts-l.org/index.html

You can search for a program that will change the Key for you, it's
called Jelly Bean key Generator, and yes you will lose you programs
unless you had a second partition that you have backed up your
programs to
