I want to buy and install Windows XP (upgrade version). I would like to
do a "Clean Install" completely replacing my existing Windows 98.
Because my present hard drive is only 8GB I plan on buying a new 80GB HD
(or larger) for XP and use the 8GB HD for miscellaneous.

Questions. What verification does XP require….Win98 CD, Win98 product
key or do I need to keep 98 installed (which would open up a new can of
worms)?

BTW, I will be upgrading my CPU, RAM, etc. also.

TIA, Jerry

All you need is the 98 CD, for verification.

Jerry stood up, at show-n-tell, and said:

A retail XP upgrade wants to be shown qualifying media. In my case, that is
a Win98 (upgrade) CD, or a CD-R backup copy of it. No product key for the
qualifying product is needed.

In principle, qualifying media should only be used with a single upgrade
copy of XP, but there is no built-in enforcement of this.

HTH.
