Good day
Yesterday I visited the Dundee City (Scotland) Webcam site which recommended
that I used an earlier Java version in order to access and control the
camera. I changed something in my IE7,possibly related to the Java setting
and now I can't use that feature at all. If I go to Tools - SunJava console
IE7 shuts down. I messed about a little bit but the result is that whenever
I try to visit any webcam I get the IE7 shutdown. Prior to my changing the
setup I was able to visit webcam sites without problem.

Grateful for any advice.

Regards

ask this in microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general

Brings back memories.. used to live there ;-)

I had it working in a very old copy of Netscape with builtin Java, which I
keep for this purpose and nothing else. Java is a total PITA, always has
version conflicts.

Either Restore to before this actions took place or Reset the IE option back
to default.
I think you gone to Security tab>> Custom settings and changed the Java
Plug-ins there.
make sure the machine is malware/virus free.

See this:
Click >> Start >> Control panel >> Internet options>> Advanced tab.
scroll down to:
[&] Javae (Sun)
[ ] Use JRE Version here for <applet> <<- Check this box

[$] Microsoft VM
[ ] Java Console enabled (Req Rest)
[ ] Java logging enabled
[ ] JIT Compiler for VM Enabled (Req Rest) <<= check this check box.
Click [OK] to apply the changes and Reboot your machine.

Thanks to all for the responses.

I checked the Java Sun Use JRE box but to no avail. I still get dumped out
of IE7 if I click on tools and Java Console.

Didn't see the: [$] Microsoft VM
[ ] Java Console enabled (Req Rest
line anywhere?

Will a system restore to some time last week help? I'm never sure how that
works!

Hi Nass

Did try a restore which went smoothly but didn't solve the problem.

I then decided to get the latest download from Java (a brave move for me).

Well this, sort of, solved the problem. I can view webcams and ckick on
tools - Java Console in IE7 without being dumped out of IE7.

I cannot take control of the webcam, despite being given the option, and the
picture is not live (as in streaming) but then it does say that I should have
an earlier version of Java in order to do that.

I think I'd better quit whilst I'm ahead.

I'm extremely grateful for your help and that from other contributers.

I'll be back in Dundee in the not too distant future. Maybe I should ask
the City Elders to update their software :).

Kind regards

Ian
Thanks once again

Glad you got it sorted somehow, but you need to see if the machine is clean
by doing these cleaning steps:

Go through these Cleaning steps:
1... First, try to clean up your caches, Internet files and delete cookies
by doing this:
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Tabs:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.
Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing
[ ] Enable Third-Party browser extensions (Req Rest) uncheck this box.
Then click on Programs Tab and click Manage Add-Ons and Disable all non
Verified Add-Ons (You should Renable them later one-by-one and see the
culprit and update it or remove it.
How to manage Add-Ons:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883256
Scan for malware from here:
SuperAntispyware - Free
http://www.superantispyware.com/superantispywarefreevspro.html

Run a scan from here on-line:
http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx
Download Avast Cleaner (offline scanner) from here:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-virus-cleaner.html

Lots of tools to download and disinfect your machine (offline scanner):
http://www.bitdefender.co.uk/site/Downloads/browseFreeRemovalTool/

After the scan run disk cleanup on your drive.
Thanks for the feedback and good luck.

Nass

Many thanks for all the information and instructions to ensure that
everything is clean.

I was worrying about the situation until your, and others, help and my wife
was keen to get me out of the den to deal with a list of other chores.

I shall now continue to enjoy my hobby and retirement and will not hesitate
to visit these pages again whether it be to continue my "education" or look
for the solution to another problem!

Thanks once again

I'd say bite the bullet and uninstall any and all Sun Java versions
and then go and grab the JRE 6.0 Update 4 version just released and
see if it fixes the broken Java component that got changed.
