Win XP home will not Reboot

After a failed attempt to install a dual boot system I can only boot from a power-off condition. Reboot hangs every time
I reloaded Win XP as a single boot system, but no reboot help

What's the problem, exactly?
 
I have Win XP Home on an AMD athlon XP2100 with 256Mb DDR and a 60Gig HD. After attempting to set up a dual boot sys. with Win98 (which failed), I set set up a single boot system. I can boot from power off with no problems, but any attempt to reboot the system will hang at the point where it is checking the IDE drives. My only option is to power off.
