I contracted a virus which rendered my pc unbootable, despite current
virus protection and zone alarm fire wall.

After consulting with COMP USA, I decided to reinstall windows. This
is one of those machines with a restore partition. The restore
partition would not restore. So, I bought windows xp home.

I did a clean install on the previous windows xp partition, (full
format, left the restore partition). Then I did the virus scan and
clean, and now I have no virus. The thing runs real slow.

I've done check disk, defrags, etc. The problem seems to be in disk
access.

I have 512mb, 1400mhz AMD, 60gb hdd.

Hewlett Packard advises me that I have to get their restore cd's and
put the machine back to where it was when I bought it.

I'm wondering I should repartition the drive and get rid of the
restore partition and try a clean install, or would I just be wasting
my time?

If there are drivers for this machine that I need, it would be nice if
HP could provide those, rather than force me into relying on their
restore disks.

Any and all suggestions are appreciated.
