One cannot perform an upgrade from Windows 95 to Windows XP.
If your computer hardware meets the requirements to install and run
Windows XP, you'll need to perform a "clean install". If you have
a Microsoft Windows 95 installation CD, then you can use the
"upgrade version" of Windows XP for a "clean install".
The only real difference is that the Upgrade version searches your computer
for the presence of an earlier Windows version that qualifies for the
upgrade pricing. Unfortunately, Win95 does not qualify. If you have a
Win9x/ME or WinNT4 or Win2K CD-ROM to "show" WinXP Setup when it asks, you
need not have the earlier Windows actually installed on your machine. If
not, you'll need the full version of WinXP, either the Professional Edition
or the Home Edition.
What you need to do is to determine whether or not your system can handle XP
before you consider upgrading it from Windows 95..
Check here for a basic test http://www.pcpitstop.com/xpready/ and http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/howtobuy/upgrading/advisor.asp for a
more comprehensive test. If you have access to an XP CD you can run the
compatibility check off it to see what it recommends. There is a Hardware
Compatibility List here that can also be helpful
