I am going to try to fix a win xp machine that blue
screens with registry problem. Hilary, Michael D. and Mary
gave me some pointers and advice yesterday. It is a Dell
desktop with a Dell Disk about one and one half years old.
Is there anything I can take like sp1 on a cd that I could
take from home? They have a dial-up connection. Will
Windows want service pack 1 installed? It will take
forever with a dial up. This may be a stupid question as I
know little about this. If so pardon my ignorance.

Yes XP will need service pack 1 installed, otherwise you will need to
download them from the update site. If you have a copy of SP1 (service
pack1) then, of course, you can use that to get the other pc updated. Just
remember that there have been further updates since the initial SP1 was
released (SP2 for instances is due for release in a few months) so check the
windows update site for 'all' critical updates that have been distributed
since the original SP1.

If you have the Windows Security CD,
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/cd/order.asp take
that. If not, and you have a broadband connection, use the
Windows Update Catalog and download all the critical and
security updates and burn them to a CD-R (finalize the
disk).
Also take a copy of STINGER http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
so you can scan for common recent viruses.
There are some good ideas in the August 3 issue of PC
Magazine for a "tool kit" for doing what you intend. see pg
90. Here is a link in case you can't find the magazine
at http://www.pcmag.com/print_article/0,1761,a=130551,00.asp
